A Midwestern Interlude

Before we took off for Shanghai, Chris and I wanted to visit the Midwestern family and friends!  The majority of the trip was spent getting last minute affairs settled, however we managed to squeeze in some fun. Here are some of the highlights from the trip.

Chris was a sweetheart and got us Cards/ Sox tickets for Thursday evening.  Our seats were on the third base line and close enough to the field that we got this warning.
I got to pose with the 2011 World Series trophy!  The only time the White Sox scored was when I was getting this shot.  Sorry Chris! :)  The Cards won, FYI!
I spent Father's Day with my Dad!!!  He loved his new Nook from Dan (brother), Chris and me.

Dad and I at the Cardinal game on Father's Day.

I had the privilege of giving my Mom iPad lessons over the trip.  I was so happy to see she and my Dad sitting in the family room, engrossed in their devices!

Chris and I took my Grandma Ahrens out to lunch before we took off.  It was wonderful to see her.

Chris and I had a friendly wager of Ted Drewes on the Cards/ Sox game, so I made him pay! :)

After our time in St. Louis, we visited Chris' family in Griffith.  In this photo Chris and his Dad are enjoying all you can eat crab legs at the Ameristar Casino.

On the way back from getting our puppies' paperwork from the USDA, we dropped by Purdue to check out our old stomping grounds.  Fuzzie Ladies, the house looks great!

I will always love Purdue.  So many happy memories!

Lunch at Harry's! (A Purdue Classic)

I take the time to pass by the Lion Fountain at Purdue.  :)  Boilermakers will find the humor in this.
We met up with my younger brother Dan for lunch at Ed Debevick's, a Chicago institution.

My younger brother rocking the Ed's hat.

Chris' Aunt Carol and Uncle Tom threw us a "Pandarific" going away party the last Sunday we were in town!  The Kosiors had decorated the entire house with cardboard pandas!

Chris catches up our Aunts and Uncles with our China plans.

Chris cools off in the pool!
It was so so wonderful to visit everyone, be it in person, online, or over the phone.  Thank you all SO much for supporting our journey.  I look forward to sharing our new life happenings with you soon!

Lessons in Moving: A Precautionary Tale

On June 8th, the big moving day arrived.  Our experience was a textbook example of what NOT to do for a move.  If you happen to be reading this blog because you are about to relocate internationally, please learn from our mistakes.

Chris and I started this experience with a plan.  The movers would pack us up and us on Friday, we would wait over the weekend (in a hotel) to make sure everything was cleaned, sell our cars on Monday, and be on the road to the Midwest Monday afternoon.   Our ultimate goal was to make it to my parents’ home in St. Louis, MO by Thursday so we could watch the Cardinals/ White Sox game at Busch Stadium on Thursday evening.   This brings us to Lesson #1: Be flexible, and don’t set unrealistic moving goals.  If you are going to pack up all of your belongings, and you and your family member(s) are pack rats, there is NO way movers can pack up your belongings in one day.

Moving day started at the bright and early hour of 6:00 am.  I wanted to be certain all of our Corningware bowls with leftovers were washed so they could be shipped.  I had 3 bowls to wash: a bowl of angel hair pasta, a container with leftover pork roast, and a bowl of edamame. I knew the angel hair would clog the garbage disposal, so I set it aside.  I turned on the food eater and tossed the edamame down the sink. As I chunked the meat in the sink, a scene more gruesome than any horror movie unraveled before my eyes.  The sink slowly filled with a beigish-green slime.  I quickly turned off the water, lost the contents of my stomach in the sink, and disassembled the piping under the sink to clear out the Oscar colored sludge.  Hence, Lesson #2: DON’T throw whole edamame (or any other fibrous veggie) down the garbage disposal.  It WILL clog your sink!

After I whined to Chris, mopped up the green slime, and reassembled the sink I needed a break.   So I took a bubble bath, jumped back into bed, and reemerged determined to change the fate of my day.  The day had to get better.  It could not get any worse.

About 10:00 or 10:30, the movers finally arrived to pack nine years of our junk.  All items were to be packed for storage, packed for airfreight, or left for our luggage.   I thought I was ahead of the game because I labeled most of our items “Air” and “Storage”.
Our living room furniture is wrapped and ready to load.

Am man they call "The Russian" packs up our bedroom.  He moved to the US with two suitcases and knowing the words "yes" and "no".

I was wrong.  Around 11:00, I heard our head mover mumbling with the home office on his cell phone.
“Is there any way you can send me another man?  They have so many things, and I have no idea where everything goes. There is no way we will get this finished today.” Upon hearing this, my heart plunged.  At that moment, I knew our original travel itenerary was fading…fast.    Refer to lesson #1 at this time.  A couple more movers came to the rescue, and help speed up the process, but all hopes of hitting the road early Monday had been dashed.

In the meantime, Chris had decided to have air conditioning folks take a look at our unit to ensure our house would be nice and frosty for our new renters.  In the process of testing and cleaning our unit, the ac overheated.  So for a few hours we were packing and sweating.  This leads me to lesson #3, If you are planning on having any appliances checked before you move, do so at least more than one week in advance.  Otherwise you may be packing in the heat.

I had mentioned in my last post that Chris and I decided to contract some minor home improvements during the moving days so we could get a better bang for our buck when renting.  In the midst of all the moving chaos, our tile man shows up to finish up tiling my bathroom shower.  About 30 minutes into his work, he realized that we were short on tile.  Chris had measured the shower correctly, but the way the tile was arranged on the sheet did not match the shower measurements.  So Chris had to call all around the Charleston area to see if we could get a couple more sheets of the tile.  (Mind you, we had special ordered this tile, so it was not like you could run to Home Depot and pick up a few more materials.)  Needless to say, Lesson #4: When custom ordering tile or any other building materials and you are in a hurry to move, order generously.     Luckily we were able to get another sheet fedexed to us, and the tile man was able to finish the job on Sunday.

As if we did not have enough going on at the time, we realized we did not want to store our family room furniture, our oversized in a bad way TV, our outdoor furniture, and other various odds and ends.  How does a 21st century couple get rid of these items?  What is Craigslist, Alex!  Lesson #5:  If you know you will not be storing or taking items with you on your relocation, sell them at the garage sale.  Putting them on Craigslist on moving day will cause chaos. J

To give everyone a summary of the events, the movers were packing, the ac men were attempting to fix the air, the tile man was tilling, Chris was pawning our stuff on Craigslist, the puppies running around “snoopervising” everything, and I was pretty much losing my mind.   I felt like my entire world was spinning out of control.  So I did what any mature adult would do. I poured myself a glass of grown up pineapple juice, turned on some Buffett and pretended I was on a beach.  Things quickly got better.  Lesson #6:  If you start to freak out on moving day, take a few minutes to calm down, and everything will start to turn around.
Ditka and I "snoopervise" the move.

Humans can be so exhausting...

Allied sent over two more movers, so at least all of our air freight could be packed, and our storage items would be ready to move on Monday.  Eventually, another AC man came to the house and fixed our cooling problem, so by the end of the day Friday, we felt like we had made some moving progress.  Fortunately, the movers left our beds so we could have a couple more days of home time.

After a shower and some dinner, Chris and I discussed how we would adjust our moving plans.  We thought the movers would be finished packing our storage stuff around noon on Monday, hence we would sell our cars in the early afternoon, bring our remaining items to goodwill, turn in the Time Warner cable box, and then we would pack the cars and hit the road.

Over the weekend, we packed more goodies, got rid of more junk, and continued prepping for the big move.
Chris insisted I photo him packing.  HA!

The movers returned about 9:30 Monday morning.  Unfortunately, they did not finish until 6:00pm due to torrential rains, so Chris and I revised our itinerary again.  Plan C: We would spend the night at the comfy Holiday Inn Express in Summerville, unload more stuff to Goodwill, turn in the Cable box, sell the cars the next morning and then hit the road mid day Tuesday.

Here is some of our storage on the moving truck.
We woke up bright and early the next morning, packed up the pups and headed toward the house.  By the time I had made a couple of Goodwill runs and returned the cable box, it was time to sell our cars.

Chris and I had planned on taking both of our cars (which happened to be on their last legs) to Automaxx so we could get some cash and get out of dodge.  Long story short, Billy from Automaxx gave me a very lousy deal for my trade in, and would not accept Chris’ car because “the transmission was slipping.”  Tell us something we didn’t know.

Chris immediately took off for Carmax, a dealer that promised to take in your trade in regardless of the car’s condition.  Luckily, we got a decent check considering the condition of the car.  At 6:30 pm, we had both successfully sold our cars.  It was time to go!!! Lesson #7: If you want to get rid of your cars quickly, take them to Carmax.  It will save you time…and money.

We were elated!  Our stuff was packed, our cars were sold, all we had to do was pack the car and take off!!!  We sped back to Summerville in our rented SUV, and started to pack the car.  About 15 minutes into packing the car, we realized that not everything would fit everything into the car.  Lesson #8 If you think you have enough room in your car for everything you will be transporting, make sure you have a plan B for everything that will be surplus.  Our plan B was to ship the surplus to Chris’ Dad’s place in Griffith.

Chris grabbed the items we were to ship and sped off to UPS.  About 10 minutes later, my cell rings. It was Chris.
“Honey, we have a problem.  UPS is closed.”  he growled.
“Okay honey, here is the new plan.  We will get take the pups to the hotel, grab the expensive bottle of Champagne that has been sitting in the fridge for a few years, and head to the hotel and celebrate our last night in Summerville.   We will be at UPS at 7:30, and on the road by 8.  We will drive straight through to Griffith, drop off the dogs, and be in St. Louis by Thursday afternoon.”  I was determined to make it to the game.

I am happy to report that Wednesday morning, we were able to ship our stuff, pack the car, pack the dogs, and hit the road by 9:30 am!
I was so happy to get on the road!

The puppies were very ready for our adventure to Grandpa Don's.

I have no idea how Chris fit all of our bags in the car.  We could not use the rearview mirror because it was so packed.

A side view of the car.

In spite of all the insanity, we made it to the Cards/ Sox game!!!

Here we were on Thursday night!
Phase One of the insanity was over!!!

A Panda, A Pig, and A Party

The past month has been a roller coaster of laughter and tears, happening at the same time.  While I am excited about my new journey, my heart is breaking because I am leaving my family of coworkers and friends.

The goodbyes started on May 18th, the day that I formally resigned.  After dropping my letter of resignation at the district office, I attended my last ITS meeting.  I noticed that on the agenda was “A Special Note”.  The special note was my surprise farewell party, complete with a Kung Fu Panda goodbye cake.

I was so surprised to find this cake at my meeting!

Apparently the team wanted to write good luck or goodbye on the cake in Chinese, but the bakery was unable to fulfill the request.  So I got Bon Voyage instead. J The ITS crew is an intelligent, hard working, and fun group.  To steal quote one of my fellow ITSses,
“I will never again work with such a special group.”

This is 5/7ths of the Elementary ITS Team.  What a great group of gals!

I am SO SO blessed to have worked with an incredible group of people these past 5 school years.

The second major round of goodbyes happened the last day of school at Beech Hill and Summerville Elementary schools.  Unfortunately they happened at the same time, so I was not able to celebrate with my Summerville peeps.  They gave me a darling monogrammed charm, so I will never forget who I am, or that I shared a great year with them.

SES 2012 was engraved on the back of the charm!  I LOVE it!

The teachers at Summerville are some of the most caring and fun people I have met.  They have a tough job, yet they teach in style!

I was able to celebrate my Palmetto’s Finest year at Beech Hill that afternoon.  My boss, Rene Harris, is one of the most incredible people I have ever met.

Auntie Rene and I share a moment during the farewell luncheon.

Auntie Rene (my aunt by adoption) has read me, grown me, and mentored me for the past five years.  She has this spidey sense about her that makes her an incredible leader who inspires excellence.  I am going to miss her and the Beech Hill crew immensely!  They are truly Palmetto’s Finest in EVERY way!!  It breaks my heart to leave.

The third round of goodbyes fell over Memorial Day weekend.  Chris’ Bosch lab mates threw us a goodbye party.
Chris' boss Tom roasts Chris with us a story of how Chris created a termite home by leaving a box of papers in the corner of the lab.

Chris displays his parting gift, an autographed lab portrait.

Chris' co-worker, Tater, rubs Chris' head for good luck.

I had a great time chatting about our adventure, enjoying his coworkers home brew, and sharing the blog with Chris’ work family.  I know that Chris is going to miss them.

My final round of goodbyes happened last Thursday.  One of my dearest friends, Melinda, came over to say goodbye.  I admit, I was really REALLY dreading this goodbye.  So in a grand Ava/Bianca/NASCAR tradition, I prepared Mel's goodbye gifts; a bag full of unused Bath and Body Works products, and a LOVELY portrait of Jimmie Johnson that has been passed between us for the last 8 years.

Mel (aka Bianca) shows off her newest art acquisition.

Since great minds think alike, she gave me a touching gift wrapped in a Holiday Chinese takeout container. After pouring us glasses of wine, I cracked open the fortune cookie that was attached to the gift and found the following fortune:

Initially, I had NO clue what this meant.
I was impressed; Mel had taken a traditional fortune cookie, tweezered out the old fortune and replaced it with a cryptic clue.  I opened the gift box to find Desperation.

My gift from Melinda...you have to love it!

Her eyes...they look so desperate!!

Desperation is a pig statue that I gave Melinda multiple years ago as a gag gift.  We call the pig Desperation because of the pained look on the pig’s face as she is nursing her piglets.  Needless to say, Desperation will have a place of honor in our Shanghai home.

After giggling for a few hours and drinking 5 year old Bartles and James Strawberry Wine coolers (in true redneck fashion), we said a tearful goodbye.

Our 11 years in South Carolina have been wonderful!  Thank you to everyone who has made our lives so blessed.

To quote Auntie Rene,
“Don’t look back, always look forward!”

Forward we shall go!

Chaos!

If there is one word to describe my last week in South Carolina, it is chaos.  Aside from the ordinary stresses of preparing for an international move, we decided to makeover parts of our home so it will be rented…quickly. So let the makeover begin!

Currently, I have nice gentlemen painting our kitchen, half bathroom, hallway, guest bedroom, and master bathroom.  Downstairs, there are gentlemen preparing to tile our kitchen, and upstairs bathrooms.

More Before Pics

Marion, the painter, prepares to make the master bathroom a paradise!
Chris reconstructs our stone patio.
Our tile man prepares the glue for downstairs.

Leia supervises her new friends.

Needless to say, I am extremely jealous of the family that rents this home.  It is looking better than I ever imagined!

Since we are 99% certain our apartment will be furnished, we are trying to determine which belongings we are are storing, which items we are selling, and which items will be shipped via airfreight.  So I am currently wandering in the construction free zones tagging our belongings with yellow post it notes labeled sell, air freight, or storage.

Yep, I need to label everything for the movers.

As soon as the rooms are finished, I will post pics online.

All I have to say is,

“Calgon take me away!!”

After our Yan Lord debacle, we have come to the realization that we need an apartment...in China...stat. Fortunately Chris returned to Shanghai, and recorded all of the apartments he visited with his tablet so I would not be left out of the house hunting process.  Here is a peek at some of our new contenders!

Seeking My Chinese Alter Ego

So another Monday Morning email from Bosch China’s HR department took me off guard…again.

Chris and I were wondering what paperwork we needed for us to get work visas.  Sally (Xu Chen), our Bosch HR contact, responded with the following list.

Why do these emails always arrive on Monday Morning?

I was taken back by item #6, your favorite Chinese name.  I had to research this phenomenon to see if it was legit.  After reading this article on echinacities.com, I decided needed to take control of the situation and select my Chinese alias.  If I let my Chinese co-workers select my name, it would more than likely end up being  “Crazy Woman with Dogs” or “American Wi-Fi Seeker”.

So in an attempt to keep the naming process real, I asked my Media Specialist for her input.  She responded,

“What about morning?  You always sign your emails A-M.”

I thought about this…it made sense.  I dashed to my computer, opened Google Translate and typed morning.

I got “早” as result.  (Pronounced Zǎo)  Chris liked it.  His exact words were “That’s very pretty.” I could actually pronounce and write it.  It seemed like a winner. To make sure all would be great with 早, I decided to ask my authority on all things Chinese, Jie  (my Chinese tutor), about a name during our Tuesday lesson.

Jie teaches me how to negotiate by showing me the hand signal for seven.
“If you would like a Chinese name, I can give you Chinese name. That would be very good! Let me think about it tonight and I will give you some names tomorrow!” she exclaimed.

At the end of my Wednesday lesson, Jie pulled out her list of names she thought were pretty.

Jie’s Names for Anne-Marie
Ānmì (安谧)- Ānmì means peaceful or tranquil.  Anyone who knows me that I am not either one of these. Hence, 安谧 is a no go.

Yè zǐ (叶紫)- Yè zǐ means Leaf.  Yeah…I don’t think so.

Bìyù (碧玉)-  Bìyù is Chinese for Jasper.  Insert your own joke here. NO NO NO!

Diāochán (貂蝉) – Apparently Diāochán has a history.  I need to make my own story in China.  I also don’t want to be named after someone who is ancient.

Bái xuě (白雪) - Bái xuě means snow.  Snow White was by far the most irritating Disney Princess, so her name is out.

When I asked her about the name Morning, she looked at me like I had 10 heads and asked,
“You want to be called  Zǎo?  That’s not a pretty name.”
She proceeded to burst into laughter for about 5 minutes.   She then told me that people would remember the name Zǎo.  I immediately knew I had to trust Jie and go for one of the names on her list.

She had one more name for me.

Mòlì (茉莉) – Mòlì  the Chinese name  for Jasmine. The characters are a little difficult to write, but I liked it.  I think we have a winner!!

Ní háo! Wò jiāo Mòlì!

Cinco de Mayo Garage Sale Extravaganza

So the first Wilcox family garage sale is officially in the books.  We had two goals for this sale, get rid of stuff and make a little cash.

This was our original Craig's List Posting.

The sale was supposed to start at 8 am.  Despite the fact that Chris threatened to feed early arrivers to attack Dachshunds, people started to arrive around 6:45.  It is a very good thing we decided to roll out of bed at 5:30 or else we could have had issues.

While we were thrilled to sell our stuff, the race to get everything out was a tad stressful.

After almost 11 years of marriage, I am ashamed to admit that I had no clue that my husband knows how to push merchandise!  His $1 tool bin idea was amazing!

People were loving the $1 tool bin!

We got to visit with many interesting people.  Our next-door neighbors, Nathan and Nolin hung out in their new beach chairs for a while.

Nolin did a GREAT job of brining people in.

Around noon, there was a lull in business so Chris decided to take a snooze.  Retail was so exhausting.

Sleeping on the job!

His nap did not last very long.  Two of the more amusing customers of the day, Chatty Cathy and Chatty Charlie, decided to visit our sale.

Chatty Cathy talks about how she is half blind.

I learned too much about Chatty Cathy during the 30 minutes we visited.  She would not stop talking, and the conversation was bizzare.  Some of her direct quotes were:

“My Chihuahua farts so loud it shakes the walls of our double wide.”
“I have put many things on Craig’s list, but every time I do they get stolen.”
“What is bad about my dog is he eats my hair.  Every time he walks around, he has dingle berries dangling.”

We could not cut her off, she was a paying customer. She bought a $.05 plastic cup she claimed she could enhance with fingernail polish.

She then engaged Chris in a conversation about firearms.

Just when I thought things could not get any stranger, they did.  The “Only True Conservative” house candidate, Jordan Bryngleson, decided to make a campaign stop at the sale.
Jordan Bryngleson on the Campaign Trail

While it was swell of him to stop by and share his views, it would have been nice if he would have purchased something.  It was a good thing that Bryngleson is an ultra conservative.  If he was liberal, Chatty Cathy may have pulled out one of her concealed weapons.  (Did I mention Chatty Cathy claimed to pack heat?)

At the end of the day, we dropped off 4 bags of leftover clothes to Goodwill and posted some unsold goodies on Crag’s list. Fortunately we made some cash that will be used to furnish our Shanghai home.

If you are interested in any of the following Craig’s list items, or some GREAT beach reading let me know. J
